# INT-Whisper > INT-Whisper | Whisper layer for vocals Builds a whispered layer of your own voice, to sit underneath it. Without recording again. ## What it does, in one sentence It takes the vocal you **already sang** and generates a whispered version of that same voice, with the same words and the same timing, to sit underneath. It's a staple in trap, pop and Latin music. ## Why it isn't the same as recording it Today that layer is made by **recording the vocal again**, whispering. The trouble is it never quite lines up: words land a few milliseconds off, breaths happen somewhere else, and you end up editing by hand to make them fit. Here the layer comes from **your own take**, so it lines up by definition. And if you change the lead vocal later, the whisper changes with it. ## How it manages that When you sing, your throat does two separate things: your **vocal cords** make the pitch (what lets you sing a note) and your **mouth and tongue** give it shape (what makes it sound like "house" and not "hose"). A whisper is exactly the same thing **without the cords**: just air taking the shape of your mouth. So the plugin separates the two: it measures the **shape** of your voice (how much energy each frequency band has, moment to moment) and gives that same shape to generated air. The result says the same words, with your same mouth, but whispered. And it looks from 500 Hz upwards, not below: that is where the mouth rules. Below that the cords rule, and copying that range into noise did not make a deeper whisper -- it covered the body of the voice. ## Where to put it It's an effect: it goes in a **mixer slot**, on the vocal track. **Your original take is never touched**: the whisper is added on top. Put it after INT-Even and your compressor, so it copies the shape of the vocal once it's already even. ## The only control you need **Whisper**: how much air is added. | Value | What happens | | --- | --- | | 0 % | Nothing is added. The audio comes out **exactly** as it went in. | | 20-40 % | Thickens the vocal and adds air, without anyone noticing something is there. | | 60-100 % | Now it's an effect: the vocal is wrapped in whisper. | Start at 35 % (where it opens) and push it up to taste. ## Why there's no hiss in the gaps Between lines there's no voice to copy, so **nothing is generated**. That's what the Gate does. It's the detail that separates this from simply adding noise: in the silences, silence. ## More options **Tone**: the colour of the whisper. Low (0-30 %) sounds closer and darker, like someone speaking into your ear. High (70-100 %) sounds airier and brighter, more ethereal. **Speed**: how closely it follows the voice. Low (3-15 ms) makes the words more intelligible but can sound harsher. High (50-200 ms) sounds smoother and more diffuse, and the words blur. **Gate**: the level below which no whisper is made. If you hear air in the gaps, **raise it**. If the whisper drops out on quiet words, lower it. ## Tips - **So nobody notices:** Whisper at 25 %, Tone at 65 %. Adds air and presence without anyone identifying what you put on it. - **Ghost effect:** Whisper at 80 %, Speed at 40 ms. The vocal ends up wrapped. - **Spoken word / narration:** Speed at 10 ms so the consonants stay clear. - **With the other plugins:** INT-Tidy → INT-Even → INT-Whisper. Clean, even out, then add the layer. ## Si algo no anda ### It doesn't show up in my DAW. Rescan your plugins. Look for "INT-Whisper" in the effects list. ### I can't hear the whisper. Check that Whisper isn't at 0 and that audio is playing. If the vocal is very quiet the gate may be closing: lower **Gate**. ### I hear air in the gaps. Raise **Gate**. ### It sounds metallic or robotic. Raise **Speed**: it's following the voice too closely. ### It covers the vocal. Lower **Whisper**.
